This series was inspired by the mystery felt through the year in Sonoran Desert in Southern Arizona. Moments like snow in the otherwise hot desert, deer appearing amidst the fog, a perennial wash, the death of a Saguaro and the return of the Monsoon form our sense of time and seasonal change.
This series was shown paired with the classical piece “Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives to connect it theoretically to the transcendentalist artistic movement in the United States.
The name of the series Topothesia connects these paintings to the world of rhetoric and invited the viewer to described places that exist within our reality but transcend our senses…the individual pieces (left to right) “Nivalis, Anemographia, Hydrographia, Dendrographia, Monsoon” much like a place in our dreams.
